Why is the Temple Mount a source of argument?

Both Judaism and Islam claim it as a holy site within their respective religions and, over the thousands of years, have fought over it in one way or another along with Christianity. Today, Israel guarantees access to the Temple Mount which is still administered by an Islamic authority as it has been for centuries -- though, according to Jewish tradition, Jews won't enter it for concern over how holy it is to their religion.
