the diversity of organisms that arises from sexual reproduction would be less. This is because of the recombination (shuffling) of genes during gamete formation (in meiosis) would not occur.

@aaronq If meiosis did not occur there would be zero sexual species. The process of sexual reproduction is only done through meiosis and while recombination does occur it is not the defining feature of meiosis.

That's true, i assumed that gametes would still be formed otherwise, so there would be fusion of parental alleles. But that obviously cannot happen. Thanks for the correction!
