Mr. Snyder wondered if a "scarecrow" would keep a Steller's Jay from eating the insulation in the eaves of his house. He thought it might, because most birds have small brains and don't reason well. Mr. Snyder put a paper cutout of a raven on a wall of his house below the eaves. He left another wall plain. After a few days he saw that the Steller's Jay had eaten insulation from both walls. He decided the paper raven did not keep the Steller's Jay away. Was this a controlled experiment? What was the hypothesis? What was the problem?
