Average is the total, divided by the number there is \[Total=8+p\] \[Average=\frac{total}{number of values}\] \[Average=\frac{8+p}{4}\]

the four scores are {8, 8, 8, p}
the average is the sum of the scores, divided by the number of scores Average = (8 + 8 + 8 + p)/4
