The birth control methods which delibrately prevent fertilization are referred to as Contraception. Contraceptive methods act by preventing any one or more of the three major steps in the reproductive process.
1)Preventing sperm motality
2)Preventing Ovulation
3)Preventing Implantation of early embryo in the uterus.

Contraceptive methods can be broadly grouped into three main types namely temporary methods, permanent methods and medical termination of pregnancy (MTP)

These can be further classified as,

1) `Natural Methods`
It includes safe period method, coitus interruptus and lactational amenorrhea.

`Safe period/Rhythm method/Periodic Abstinance Method`
A week before and after the menses is considered the safe period for sexual intercourse. The idea is based on ther following facts
\(\bullet\)Ovulation occurs on about 14th day (ranges from 13th to 16th day) of ovulation.
\(\bullet\)Ovum survives for about 1-2 days.
\(\bullet\)Sperms remain alive for about 3 days
This method may reduce the chances of pregnancy upto 80%

`Coitus Interruptus`
It involves the withdrawal of the penis from the vagina by the male before ejaculation so that semen is not deposited in the vagina and there is no fertilization.
`Male produces some lubricating fluid from his cowper's glands before ejaculation. This fluid contains many sperms. A lapse in timing and willpower may result in late withdrawal and hence pregnancy.`
This method is not very much safe !
