A thesis is a point that an author is trying to make. In your example, Author A thinks that it was fine for the colonists to want independence. Author B thinks that the British helped the colonists more than harmed them. They are opposite viewpoints. Therefore, Author B is refuting the original claim Author a makes. Does that make sense?
