Why is the United States a democracy?

OpenStudy (fateal):

Is that a real question or are you being sarcastic? What make the US a democracy is by giving the governing power in the hands of representatives that are elected by its citizens via elections held every number of years. Representatives like presidents, congressmen, and governors have short term office, making their power relying on the people every 2-4 years. It prevents any one person or entity from having too much power and cause opposition and tyranny such as countries of dictatorships and kings. It also place a limit on the number of terms, except for governors and lesser representatives. It is not an absolute democracy, but it is more of a mixed of democracy and other systems with the option to remove and overthrown its leader. Much like how the melting pot that describe Americans, the US itself, laws, and systems are a mixture, too. It has mostly democracy with some elements of socialism, communism, and dictatorship.

It is a real question for a Civics assignment.

OpenStudy (fateal):

its so that no one will be able to gain the power by themselves...its just to make sure that the people get what they want n not be controlled by someone else lel sorry

OpenStudy (shelby1290):

okay i get it

OpenStudy (shelby1290):

but would you consider the states to have legal rights?

OpenStudy (fateal):

its kind of related to the old days uk...i mean when they were with the slaves thing...its just cus some states want to have some kind of power to make sure that thier people don't go crazy... like a mini president.... just to feel that they have power...im getting lost now o.e

OpenStudy (shelby1290):

ok so legal rights up to a certain point?

OpenStudy (fateal):

yes...cus the president cant focus on everything so he divide the power...he doesnt give them the last word just to make sure that they wont go against him uk

OpenStudy (shelby1290):

oh okay then

OpenStudy (fateal):

hope this helped :)
