These days? Not much... when they were new? Well, an advantage in the audio or in the data storage?

Back in the day when they were replacing floppy/stiffy drives a main advantage would be the extra storage space they provided. Nowadays I think even DVD-writers are on their last legs.

Well, bang for the buck on DVD vs BluRay still has a ways to go, so DVD are still good archival stuff. And to be honest, CDs never replaced floppies. Sure, they became the default install medium for anything that would have needed a stack of floppies, but that did not kill the floppy. The thumb drive, on the other hand, was the final death blow to the floppy. Wounded by the CD, they could still be resused very easily. But Thumb Drives finished off that need.
