Solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water, unlike most other chemicals. This is due to the directional nature of the hydrogen bonds between water molecules, which create a rigid structure that is more "spacious" than liquid water, where molecules can move more freely. This means that ice will float in water, which effectively allows marine life to exist in sub-zero temperatures. Water has a relatively high specific heat capacity (i.e. can absorb a relatively large amount of thermal energy for a given temperature change). Given that water covers a large proportion of the earth's surface, it essentially acts as a "heat sink" for much of the heat coming from the sun. If it were not for the vast network of seas and oceans, the earth would be at a significantly higher temperature.
