What is the best name for this molecule? Explain your naming process.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

the CH at the right-side end of the molecule doesn't have the right number of H atoms, or the one next to it has too many, if there's going to be a double bond present

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its pent-ethane or something @JFraser

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

i would said 3 ethyl pentane but is missing one H in the last C

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

@deedee96 that cannot be a pentane because you're missing 2 hydrogens -ane has the chemical formula \[C_nH_{2n+2}\]

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

alkanes*

OpenStudy (jfraser):

if the formula were correct, it would be 2-ethyl-pentane. Without the last 2 H atoms on the last CH group, that molecule doesn't exist
