is genetically modifying the translation of that gene, it will not be expressed, for example medication/therapy for cancer help silent that gene that is causing the over expression of cells, that is just one example, make sure to know the definitions as there is different methods also like gene knockout etc... many different methods

This answer is partially correct. Gene silencing can modify either the translation or transcription of a gene so that it is not expressed. 
One thing important to note is that gene silencing is NOT the same as gene knockout. It is the same as gene knockDOWN however.

@liz_mustang My bad. Seeing as how the question was about gene silencing, I had assumed you were referring to methods of gene silencing rather than methods of genetic modification.
