i need help who is good at word problems

OpenStudy (anonymous):

David has a hose that is 27 ft long. He wants to cut it into two pieces so that the longer piece is 3 ft more than 2 times the length of the shorter piece. How long will each piece of hose be? Shorter piece: ft Longer piece: ft

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plz help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

long 30 short 13.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Short : 5.25 Long : 21.75 I think...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because \[\frac{ 27 }{ 2 } = 13.5\] 13.5 - 3 = 10.5 divide 10.5 in half and you get 5.25 and that's the short one Then the remaining 21.75 is the long one.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have u done this before

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. A little while ago.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wat did u get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Short : 5.25 Long: 21.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it wont let me type the whole 5.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then try 5 \[\frac{ 1 }{ 4 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will it let you use a decimal at all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it will but does let me type the whole thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here is the answer Short: 12 Long: 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because you take 27 and subtract 3 which equals 24 Then... Divide by 2 which gives you 12 (short) Then take 27 and subtract 12 which gives you 15 (long)....

OpenStudy (jademc01):

12 and 15 isn't correct. I have no idea how this is done, but I entered that as the answer and both were wrong :-(.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

S + L = 27 L = 2S + 3 Substitute in and solve.
