https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090108111852AAAuLmQ The slave markets exploded during the great muslim period. Slaves were driven to Bagdad by boat from Africa, by caravanes, on foot, from India trough Kashmeer, and even from Russia through Constantinople. The 7th-10th centuries were a period of great prosperity, which can be seen today in some names of places : the cape in the Eastern Horn of Africa is called bab-el-mandeb ("the door of the tears"), that was the last strip of African land the slaves would see; in India, a mountain is called Hindu-Kush, "the killer of Indians", because the Indian slaves would often die because of the cold on their journey to Persia and Bagdad. Only the strongest would survive. Great trade.
