If you move the 5 in 5+x=9 to the RHS (Right Hand Side), wouldn't the number 5 become -5, so that would be subtraction. If you want to look at it another way. What would you do to 5+x=9 to get x=4? Well clearly, it looks as though you have to subtract 5 to both sides.
