WILL FAN AND MEDAL TO WHOEVER EXPLAINS THIS TO ME! Matilda practices guitar for a total of 70 minutes every day. She spends 10 minutes more practicing the electric guitar than the acoustic guitar.
Write a pair of linear equations to show the relationship between the number of minutes Matilda practices the acoustic guitar every day (x) and the number of minutes she practices the electric guitar every day (y).
I need an explanation please.

step 1. Give names (i.e. assign a letter) to the 2 unknowns. To do this, you need to identify the 2 unknowns. Any idea what they are ?
idk, im guessing for x it is 30?? and for y it is 40?
@Hero
they help you with the names. number of minutes with acoustic guitar is x number of minutes with electric guitar is y
Once you have names, you can talk about them if you practice x minutes on acoustic, then switch to electric and practice y minutes how many minutes do you practice all together? you add them. you write x+y
now focus on this practices guitar for a total of 70 minutes
yes, i know that but I i don't know if they are asking me to guess the numbers or what, and im guessing that x = 30 and y = 40 but i am not sure, there could be a bunch of different solutions
the question is asking for a pair of equations i.e. 2 equations. Once we have them, we can solve them for the number of minutes on each type. (But for this question, all they want is the equations)
And writing the equations takes practice. The idea is to try to think as we go along (this is how I think as I'm solving the problem) and so far you should think: amount of practice is x+y (add up the time spent on each type) that is the total time and the total time is *also* Matilda practices guitar for a total of 70 minutes
when you have two different ways of writing the same thing, you can set them equal to each other. x+y is total time 70 is total time can you write the equation?
x+y = 70
that is one of the equations. we need one more.
so we use the next sentence She spends 10 minutes more practicing the electric guitar than the acoustic guitar.
now remember, we gave names: minutes on electric guitar is "y" minutes on acoustic guitar is "x"
I'm thinking x + 10 = y
She spends 10 minutes more practicing the electric guitar than the acoustic guitar. y is time on electric x is time on acoustic 10 more on electric.... that means y is bigger than x (right?) in fact y is x+10 (this says time on electric is 10 more than on acoustic)
yes, x+10=y is the other equation. nice job!
:) thanks! I am going to keep this question open for a bit because there are two other parts to the question that i MIGHT need help with, so ill tag you if i need help. Thank you :)
you might get a faster response if you make the other parts a new post.
How much time does Matilda spend on practicing the acoustic guitar every day? -_- ...
and, um ok i'll make another post
