OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did

hartnn (hartnn):

when triangles are similar, their sides are proportional! can you form an equation, equating the proportional sides ?

OpenStudy (acxbox22):

its okay i have enough steel to last me a few months

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ hartnn i have no idea how to do that

hartnn (hartnn):

solved any similar triangles question before ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know how to make an equation for it

hartnn (hartnn):

ok, since ABC ~ DEC side AB is corresponding to side DE side AC is corresponding to side DC can you tell me now, BC is corresponding to which side ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

EC

hartnn (hartnn):

thats correct! now sides are proportional means the ratio of corresponding sides is EQUAL

hartnn (hartnn):

so, we have \(\Large \dfrac{AB}{DE } =\dfrac{AC}{DC}=\dfrac{BC}{EC} \) got this ?

hartnn (hartnn):

plug in the values of all the sides that you know like you know AB = 36 so put 36 in place of AB in that equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

36/6=63+x/x+3 ?

hartnn (hartnn):

yep, thats correct! 36/6=(63+x)/(x+3) can you try to solve for x from here ?

hartnn (hartnn):

36/6 = 6 then do cross-multiplication 6(x+3) = 63+x now it should be east to find x :) try it

hartnn (hartnn):

**easy

hartnn (hartnn):

any luck ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

trying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the x+3 and 63+x is throwing me off a bit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i do 36 times x+3?

hartnn (hartnn):

its 6 times (x+3) not 36

hartnn (hartnn):

\(a(b+c) = ab+ac \\ 6(x+3) = 6\times x + 6\times 3 = ... ?\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3

hartnn (hartnn):

how ?

hartnn (hartnn):

6x +18 = 63+x 6x-x = 63 -18

hartnn (hartnn):

5x =45 couldn't be any easier...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=9

hartnn (hartnn):

thats correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 9?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry bout the derpness lol but thanks!

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
