a rectangular window has a length of 72.1 cm and a width of 18cm. use the correct number of significant digits to write each indicated measure. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

OpenStudy (adamaero):

sig fig for area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The length has 3 sig figs and the width 2, we know that so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok whats a sig figs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is there an area or another measure you are given?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Significant Figures. These are the quantity of numerical measures by which calculations can show the least error in their evaluation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it says find the perimeter and find the area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not helping lol. Ok, so you need to know about significant figures a bit more. We find area by multiplying length x width, and perimeter by adding the widths and the lengths. With significant figures, adding and multiplying are done a bit different and is a little hard to explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at this to see how/what sig figs are. http://www.usca.edu/chemistry/genchem/sigfig.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, so when we multiply, we keep the same number of sig figs as the one with the least. So 72.1 x 18 = 1297.8 but in 18 we only have 2 sig figs so our answer will have 2. Or 1300. This would be our area.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And with adding them, I don't really remember... I'm sorry I'm not much help today =(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok i dont get it either

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say keep the same number as the least as well so when adding them together, just keep two at the end as well. Like 72.1 + 72.1 + 18 + 18 = 180.2 for perimeter. But make it 180.

Does that help?
