welcome to open study and "Capillary action" is the ability of a liquid to flow inside of very narrow tubes, without the need for gravity. 

Plants use capillary action, to allow water to flow through their roots and veins, so that they can live.

@bellablain Okay, I should say against any external forces.  Under your statement if we merely poured water out of a narrow tube that would be called capillary action.
