A direct object is a noun or pronoun that answers the question What? or Whom? after the action verb. So you could find the action verb first then the direct object will follow, for example: "Do farmers still plant crops in those fields?" Ask yourself where is the action verb: plant, so the direct object is "crops" then ask yourself "What did the farmers plant? Crops.
