Tim has 40 coins consisting of dimes and quarters and the total value of 4.90. How many coins for each kind? Solve one step equation.
OpenStudy (help!!!!):
Could you show me just the equation?
OpenStudy (x3_drummerchick):
40 = d + q
10x + 25x = 4.9
OpenStudy (x3_drummerchick):
10x + 25y =4.9 *

"Tim has 40 coins consisting of dimes and quarters"
so d+q = 40
solve for d to get d = 40-q
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
The total value is $4.90, ie 490 cents
so
10d + 25q = 490
10(40-q) + 25q = 490 ... plug in d = 40-q
now solve for q and tell me what you get
OpenStudy (help!!!!):
q=-24
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
q = # of quarters
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you can't have a negative number of quarters

400-10q+25q=40 right after I distribute
OpenStudy (help!!!!):
now 15q+400=40
OpenStudy (help!!!!):
15q=-360
q=-24
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
how did you get 40 on the right side?
OpenStudy (help!!!!):
opps 400

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
remember the equation before you distribute is
10(40-q) + 25q = 490
OpenStudy (help!!!!):
oh i got it q=6
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
me too
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
then you use that to find d
d = 40-q
d = 40-6
d = 34
OpenStudy (help!!!!):
yup i got you, thanks for the help man!!
