can someone please explain scientific notation? Medal and fan to anyone that helps!!

OpenStudy (mitu12):

Scientific notation is a way of writing numbers that are too big or too small to be written in decimal form.

Can you explain it in a bit more detail?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you write 10 to the power of something for example 10^3 means you shift the decimal 3 places to the right 10^-4 means shifting it 4 places to the left. so for example you could write 430 as 4.3*10^2 and 0.002 as 2*10^-3
