Why is a person with an HIV infection unable to get rid of this infection the way a person can get rid if an infection with a cold or flu virus?

The HIV virus mutates too rapidly for our immune system to combat, and while it is doing this it destroys our immune system, so the immune system no longer functions. a cold or flu virus does not do this.
