In an effort to reduce the mass of an aluminum bulkhead for a spacecraft, a machinist drills an array of holes in the bulkhead. The bulkhead is a triangular- shaped plate with a base and height of 2.5 m and 1.6 m respectively and a thickness of 7mm. How many 5cm diameter holes must be drilled clear through the bulkhead to reduce its mass by 8kg? for the density of aluminum, used p= 2800 kg/m^3
...Wow, I almost thought that was a Chemistry problem when I saw aluminum. Lol gimme a sec. :p
First, I solved for the Volume by using the equation for a cylinder V = (pi)(r^2)(h) Then, I used the equation W = V * p I substituted in the actual values to get: 8 = (.000013744)(2800)x x = the number of holes I will need After simplifying I got: 8 = .03848x Then, I solve for x to get 208 holes required. this is what I did.
... I think I'll just call a pro in..... @satellite73 ? e_e
(I have a lot of homework due tomorrow. I'm sorry but I really don't have the time to figure this out, although I do know how to do it. D:)
I just need help figuring out the volume of the cylinder after that I got it
You don't know the volume formula for the cylinder or your answer doesn't match the answer key?
I know the volume formula I just don't know what numbers to put in In order to get .000013744
@kittiwitti1
Okay from what I can remember, you're supposed to find the volume of each "cylinder" hole and then divide 8 kg by that....
Yeah but Im stuck in volume part I just need to know what to put as the radius and height but after that I got it. I know the volume needs to equal to .000013744
5cm diameter = 2.5 cm radius
The height would be the 'thickness' since you're drilling clear to the other end.
okay so radius is 2.5 and height 7 because its the thickness right?
