This occurs because of the coriolis force (the rotation of the earth on its axis). The earth spins around from west to east, which causes winds to deflect to the right in the northern hemisphere, and to the left in the southern hemisphere. The United States is in the northern hemisphere, so winds travel to the right, aka.from west to east. These winds carry weather across the United States by blowing clouds and other various weather conditions towards the area the winds are blowing towards, therefore seeing as wind travels from the west to the east in the United States, weather will also always travel from the west to the east in the United States
