The function of the mitochondria are to provide energy for the cell in the form of ATP (adensosine tri-phosphate). The mitochondria use the products of glycolysis (which takes place in the cytoplasm) and through the Kreb's/Citric Acid cycle break them down into simpler molecule thereby releasing the energy to drive the phosphorylation of ADP (adensosine di-phosphate) into ATP which can be used by the cell to drive the cells needs.
