The earth's carbon and water cycles add greenhouse gases naturally to the atmosphere (carbon dioxide and water vapor, largely). These are helpful for the greenhouse effect as they keep the earth warm enough for life. Volcanic eruptions are another natural cause of carbon dioxide. Other greenhouse gases like methane come from decomposing organic matter, melting tundra and lakes and from poor agricultural practices, like cattle and pig rearing and rice paddy fields. More serious greenhouse gases come from man's activities in the last 260 years. We discovered and began burning serious stocks of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). This is releasing carbon dioxide that has been sequestered away underground for millions of years. Deforestation: We also cut down great swathes of natural forests, that used to absorb carbon dioxide from the air, release the oxygen and store the carbon.
