HELP! How many significant figures are in the number 70.80?

OpenStudy (igreen):

Three. 7, 0, and 8. The 0 after the 8 is not significant because you do not need it.

Can you help me with a couple more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3. 7, 0 and 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So there would be four instead of 3 in 70.80?

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

there's 4 significant figures

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much. Could you please help me with a couple more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. 0.0056 2.5400 Could you help me with those two?

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

Zeros in between numbers and trailing zeros or zeros to the right are significant. now try to figure the answers out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you. I will try

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would there be two in 0.0056?

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could anyone help me with one more? This question says to add 2.4 +2.47. It asks for the correct answer in significant figures. so would I add the 2.4+2.47.? and then find out how many significant numbers are in it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4. When the issue of significance arises, then the trailing zero is significant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer for the 2.4 + 2.47 wouldn't be 3?

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

first, add the numbers. what you've got?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.87

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

now, among the two addends, which one is having the least significant figure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4?

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

between, 2.4 and 2.47

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.4?

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

yes. how many significant figures are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

yes that's correct. now round the sum up such that it would have 2 significant figures.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would my answer be 4.87?

OpenStudy (shinalcantara):

no.. the sum of the two numbers is 4.87 yet it will follow the number of significant of the addend with the least significant figures so you will round it off to 2 significant figures
