How did the colony of New Amsterdam become New York? (Points : 3) The British king decided to rename the colony after his wife's family. When the English captured the territory from the Dutch the king gave it to his brother, the Duke of York. The Dutch and British agreed on the change as part of a treaty. The Dutch traded the rights in exchange for trade agreements in India.
