Jay Spring pays $350.00 annually for his health insurance. This is 1/3 of the total cost of the premium; his company pays the rest. He pays a $200 deductible and the plan pays 90% of all expenses beyond the deductible. This year Jay paid expenses of $1,800 beyond the deductible. How much did Jay's company pay for his insurance premium?

This question is worded kind of confusing to me because the question at the end is asking for how much his company paid for Jay's insurance premium, but it tells you at the beginning that Jay pays 350 which is 1/3 of the premium. So if his portion is 1/3 and it's 350, then the company pays 2/3 which is 233.33 But all the other information added on about deductibles and whatnot...do they want the premium PLUS the amount beyond the deductible or just the premium? I have the answers to both, but I don't know which to provide to you.

Both please.

Ok, the amount that the company paid for the premium, if Jay's 1/3 of the amount was 350, was $700. One-third of what amount is 350? I got the total amount of the payment to be 1050, but since the company is only responsible for 2/3 and Jay is responsible for the other third, I figured out what 2/3 of 1050 was. Came out to $700. THEN, if the company pays 90% over and above the deductible Jay pays, and Jay paid 1800, then I figured the total amount paid above and beyond the deductible, which was 18000. Jay paid 10% of that and the company paid 90%. 90% of 18000 is 16,200. So the company paid 700 in premiums and 16,200 in expenses beyond the deductible.
