please help, how to find out ion of an element, for example lithium, how do i know to add 2 or take away 2 or 1 or whatever!!!!

lots of element lose or gain electrons until their electronic configuration become as noble gas electronic configuration. transition elements don't behave like this.(there is some exceptions). but most representative elements behave like this.
