That's exactly what I'm reviewing right now. So I would need to memorize the proportions of every unit? I assume I would do the same with meters and seconds.

kinda. if you wanted to convert 3 days into minutes, you would do something similar
\(\large \frac{3\cancel{days}}{}*\frac{24 \cancel{hours}}{1\cancel{day}} *\frac{60minutes}{1\cancel{hour}} \)
