Which sentence employs a metaphor? The desert shuddered at night as the cold wind blew past it. His smile was as warm as the early morning sunshine. The rats in the house were like lions when the owners were away on a vacation. He waved goodbye to his town and drove away into the darkness of uncertainty.

the last one

The first option would be considered a personification, because in reality the desert can't really shudder the way humans can, right? The second option is obviously a simile, using the word "as" to compare the "warm smile" and the "early morning sunshine" The third option is also a simile, because it uses the word "like" to compare the "rats" to "lions" That leaves us with the last option where "darkness" is being compared to "uncertainty" without using "like" or "as", therefore being considered a metaphor.
