What is the value of x? 8x-9=3x+16 x=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 5

OpenStudy (itsbribro):

x=5

5

OpenStudy (compassionate):

8x - 9 = 3x + 16 First, add 9. This is because we need to perform the opposite operation. 8x = 3x + 25 Now, we need to subtract 3x. We subtract 3x as a whole because x is sought to be apart of the unit "3." Normally, we would divide by 3, but since we're not isolating x and simply carrying it over, we can subtract. 5x = 25 Now you simply divide as a last step since x has been isolated with it's coefficient.

Yeah then you divide both sides by 5 and 5x/5 cancels out and 25/5 = 5 So x=5
