for programming. KISS. seriously. start basic and add functionality by bits. test the bits. if they don't work, fix the bits. :-) don't try to do a complex program all in one shot or finding your bugs/errors will be unbelievably difficult. Use commenting to hide problem code so you can work on it and/or identify the problem.
