It's like a single company or person that is the only supplier of a particular product/item.

How does it relate? Not sure how your teacher would want to see it but it is something that happens in the world and some products are produced that way.

Why is it important to know? Not sure what to say about that except that you'll hear the word pop up in history classes or if someone refers to a business as a monopoly.
