f(x)= 3x is translated 6 units up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x) = 3x + 6

Whenever we add or subtract on the outside of the function like this, it is a vertical shift up or down.

So the translation of a graph upward means that the y value must increase by 6 units, meaning that the overall equation must have 6 units added to the function side of the equation. Thus, the final equation would be f(x) 3x + 6. Exactly like Cosmichaotic said.

Also remember, that when a translation is done directly to x, it follows the x axis in the opposite direction as you would think. For example f(x) = 3(x+3)... This actually moves it to the left 3 units instead of right like you would think. Just as a note.
