P is a positive integer. When p+3 is divided by 8, the remaider is 5. What is the remainder when P is divided by 8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets try it with \(p=10\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that makes \(p+3=13\) and when you divide \(13\) by \(8\) the remainder is \(5\) as requested

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the remainder when you divide \(10\) by \(8\) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bingo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that was just an example to show the answer is reasonable we could just as well have gotten the answer by asking what is \(5-3\)

i have another question... When a certain number is divided by 8 there is no remainder. If when the number is divided by 16 there is a remainder, the remainder must be?
