In the story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, does the dog love the man? I doubt it; the relationship between the dog and the man was based on negative reinforcement and the promise of food and fire. Even when the man died the dog smelled it on him and just left in search of other humans to provide him with what he needed to survive.
