OpenStudy (anonymous):

In what way would readings from a digital thermometer be preferable to those from a liquid-based thermometer?

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

the reading a digital display will help in avoiding error of individual approximation. It's gives a hole number you don't need to introduce a human uncertainty. The instrument is giving you the uncertainty in the reading. May be other factors too

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

also depends of the temperature that you want to measure,if the temperature is too high or too low the liquid can evaporate or freeze before reaching the temperature. The digital ones they may use a metal couple resistent to extreme temperatures

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

all things considered, that is if both the digital thermometer is not malfunctioning and human reading the liquid-based thermometer properly, it is about the precision of the measurement errors cannot be avoided as there is always some sort of error. it is making those error rather small
