What are the living and nonliving characters of virus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A virus is living, because it grows and it exhibits some characteristics of life, and it is not alive because it is not self aware

Viruses are not considered "alive" because they lack many of the properties that scientists associate with living organisms. Primarily, they lack the ability to reproduce without the aid of a host cell. aka they need help from another organism to reproduce and can not do it on their own
