it's 8. the two brackets around the 12 mean that you have to find the absolute value of 12. Absolute value is how far a number is from zero on the number line so whether it said 12 or -12 the absolute value would still be 12 because 12 and -12 are 12 place from zero on the number line. Hope that helps
