Who died in The Cask of Amontillado and why did they die??

Can't remember the name, but the man who was promised the amontillado died.
When both men reached the bottom, the one who was promised it was in disbelief and the other simply plastered some bricks to trap him inside. It can be assumed he died from lack of oxygen, starvation, or from the odd gas in the crypt.
