what is 0.0059 in scientific notation

OpenStudy (phi):

scientific notation has the form number * 10^exponent the number is from up to (but not including 10) in your case 0.0059 we want the number to be 5.9 (5.9 is between 1 and 10) to make it 5.9 we moved the decimal place 3 places to the right we made 0.0059 *bigger* to compensate, we write 10^exponent where the exponent is *negative* (this means we are dividing , making the exponent part *smaller* ) the exponent is -3 and you write 5.9E-3 or \( 5.9 \cdot 10^{-3} \)
