OpenStudy (phi):

if you want -4.1 to "disappear" what should you add to the right side ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-8.6 - -4.1

OpenStudy (phi):

or just add 4.1 -8.6 + 4.1 (which is the same thing as -8.6 - -4.1) to simplify, ignore the signs (for the moment) and subtract the smaller number from the bigger. then assign the sign of the bigger number to the answer.

-4.5 b

yess!

OpenStudy (phi):

you can always check the answer: try x= -4.5 in the problem \[- 8.6 = -4.1 + x\\ -8.6 = -4.1 + -4.5 \]
