What is the value of x in the solution to the following system of equations? x − 2y = 2 3x + y = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@cram @aum

OpenStudy (aum):

We want x and so eliminate y. Multiply second equation by 2 and add it to the first equation. What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wot m8

OpenStudy (aum):

3x + y = 6 multiply throughout by 2. what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6x+y=12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6x+2y=12?

OpenStudy (aum):

Yes. Now add this to the first equation. 6x + 2y = 12 x - 2y = 2 Add

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+6x=7x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i doing that right

OpenStudy (aum):

6x + 2y = 12 x - 2y = 2 --------------- 7x 0 = 14 ---------------- 7x = 14 divide both sides by 7 x = 2

OpenStudy (aum):

We are adding like terms above. 6x + x = 7x 2y + (-2y) = 0 12 + 2 = 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i knew how to do that part at least. thanks for setting it up for me. i understand it now

you are welcome.
