How did the Industrial Revolution in the United States affect life in the cities? Unplanned urban growth eventually forced most residents to leave cities for rural areas. New factory owners provided important services like garbage collection to city residents. Rapid urbanization lead to overcrowding and spread of disease. As factories expanded and cities grew, so did police and fire protection.
