What is patching and modding, and what is the difference?

Patching is applying an update or fix to a program, modding is making a modification to it to make a change different from the original.

Examples in terms of pants:

Your pants are ripped, you apply a patch to update them and fix what was wrong = same pants.
Your pants are fine, but you bedazzle them to make them look cooler and more fashionable = different pants, and a modification.
