Need some help with this question please! Lactic acid fermentation occurs in any environment where oxygen is present yeast cells the mitochondria of plant cells muscle cells

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm pretty sure that it's yeast cells.

OpenStudy (znappydooz):

Can you explain why?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Alcoholic fermentation occurs in yeast cells. Lactic acid fermentation occurs in muscle cells after they've been depleted of \(O_2\) - the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain. Muscle cells resort to anaerobic (no-oxygen) respiration to re-oxidize NADH to \(NAD^+\) in order to be able to continue with glycolysis. Both, alcoholic and lactic acid fermentation, are types of anaerobic respiration.
