Gabriela Mistral In a regular Spanish class, you can learn about Spanish literature. Today, you will learn about Gabriela Mistral, one of the most famous poets from the Spanish-speaking world. In fact, she was the first Latin American poet to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Mistral was born in Vicuña, Chile in 1889. She loved nature and often wrote about her childhood in the Elqui Valley, where she grew up among mountains, trees, and water. Mistral’s original name was Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga, but she changed it later and took the pen name Gabriela Mistral. Even though she did not receive a formal education, she worked hard and became a teacher and school administrator. She traveled all over Chile working on behalf of children and their educational opportunities. Mistral began publishing poems while she was a teacher. She began to gain recognition for her work as a poet and a teacher, and in 1925 she moved to France to represent Latin America for an institute that was part of the League of Nations. She then worked all over the world, in New York, Madrid, Lisbon, and other cities as a foreign consul. In 1945, she won the Nobel Prize, the highest of literary honors.
