The king was the chief priest and the representative of God on earth. In later years, the king appointed priests to look after the temple or the ziggurat. The priests occupied a very important position in society. The Mesopotamians may have believed in life after death. Drinking vessels, ornaments, weapons, etc., have been found in some graves
